Modern and Retro
The DeLonghi BAR32 expresso machine is a mix of retro and modern that creates and, hopefully this makes sense, a classic retro chic but at the same time modern. The great looks are mixed with more premium grade coffee making features than you will find on any other pump espresso makers.
So if contemporary or modern is your thing then this is probably not for you. The modern look does work well it's true the gleaming metal and hard lines black which takes much from Swedish design ethics is a winner.
But with that said the 50's retro look is one you'll be hard pressed not to fall in love with. And after all, as coffee is all about taste why not the machine design too?
A coffee machines functions though are not about looks, here we cannot be subjective. The BAR32's functions are pretty amazing considering the price, you don't normally see them until you are much higher up the price scale, even to the $1000 level.
The first big feature of note in this expresso machine is definitely the pump driven mechanism. Yes steam coffee makers can do a good coffee it is a fact, but for a superb cup you need the sort of high-pressure that only a pump can produce. But do not expect 32 bars, odd how they called it the 32, maybe advertising gone mad nevertheless it does give 15 bar and that's a good pressure level.
The self priming feature is also very good helping you make extremely quick and easy expresso. Plus it has a simple set of controls which makes it ideal for newcomers.
You won't need a pricey bean grinder either as the simple portafilter gets rid of the necessity of one. And you may use pods, just put one in, brew, take away and dispose of out making for a very simple tidy up.
Or in case you prefer you can use grounds where the functions are much better to use than many very expensive expert coffee makers.

Summing up
It's great to discover such a great looking espresso maker with such expert characteristics at such a low cost. How DeLonghi do it for the price I don't know but nor do I care provided that they do - and they do! The DeLonghi BAR32 is one for any budget buyers shortlist for sure.
